Merion Village takes its name from the Merion family, who settled this part of the South Side in 1809. Many of the homes went up in an early-1900s building boom, when the mills to the south drew workers and streetcars ran down Parsons Avenue. Today the bungalows and cottages along streets like Thurman, Sheldon, and Hanford are about 100 years old, and many are on their second or third roof.
